The robotic visionaries from Düsseldorf in Katowice! Kraftwerk kicks off the lineup for next year’s 14th edition of the Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice festival. On June 21, we will have a chance to get acquainted with a musical vision of the future that became the present. They have inspired Aphex Twin, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, New Order and thousands of other artists, and managed to remain relevant. In January, Kraftwerk’s latest album – “3-D The Catalogue” – was honoured with the Grammy award. Thanks to a unique combination of music, performance and technology, their live shows constitute a multimedia work of art.
The band was founded in 1970 on the initiative of Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. Together they opened the Kling Klang studio in Düsseldorf, where Kraftwerk’s one-of-a-kind aesthetics came into being. Fascinated by futurism, expressionism and technological development, they began experimenting with robotics and electronics. Thanks to an innovative approach, they quickly gained international recognition. In the 1970s and 1980s, Kraftwerk (“power station” in German) recorded the soundtrack for the upcoming digital era. At the end of the second decade of the 21st century, their music still sounds unbelievably fresh and remains relevant, as proven by the titles such as “Autobahn”, “Computer Love”, “Europe Endless”, “Metropolis” or “Pocket Calculator”.
The band’s recordings encompass synthetic voices, computer-generated rhythms and melodies, as well as innovative sound technologies. Their music has had a significant impact on the modern scene. Kraftwerk are considered the inventors of electronic music, simultaneously providing inspiration for techno, hip-hop and synthpop artists. Their work has strongly influenced Aphex Twin, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, New Order, The Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson) and thousands of other artists. The Germans’ music was sampled by Afrika Bambataa, Jay-Z, Kanye West and even Coldplay.
Kraftwerk’s live shows combine music and performance, and they are often described as “Gesamtkunstwerk” – a total work of art. In summer 1981, during the period called the “Carnival of Solidarity”, Kraftwerk visited Poland for two performances in the Spodek venue in Katowice. Those concerts went down in history not only for political reasons.
Contemporary concert versions of the band’s classic hits preserve the original charm, while the latest sound technologies make them shine even brighter. After a retrospective series of 3D live shows at New York’s MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in 2012, Kraftwerk has given performances in numerous iconic places, including Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London, Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo, Opera House in Sydney, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, Neue National Galerie in Berlin and Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Now, we would like to invite you to meet Ralf Hütter and his colleagues on June 21 in Katowice’s Culture Zone during Kraftwerk’s show at the 14thTauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice!
Originally a duo composed of Mike Milosh and Danish producer Robin Hannibal (known from Quadron, among other projects), Rhye was conceived in 2012. Their two initial singles quickly became an internet sensation, catching the attention of both the audience and critics. They successfully stunned the industry with their debut album “Woman”, highly acclaimed by various media, including Pitchfork, The New York Times and The Guardian. Robin Hannibal left the group in 2017, before the release of their second album “Blood”. Since then, Rhye had evolved into a fluid music collective, focused around its frontman, producer and vocalist, Mike Milosh.
All the changes to the band’s lineup have not influenced the sound of Rhye in any way, and it still can be simply described as a mosaic of emotive piano keys, buzzing analog synths, vibrant percussion and expansive vocals. Milosh’s distinctive falsetto and sophisticated video clips successfully complete this intoxicating blend of R&B and electro inspired music. The group has gained worldwide popularity and has been regularly performing at the biggest and most important festivals, including Coachella. On June 20, Rhye’s enchanting performance will kick off the 14th edition of Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice!
The opening concert will be hosted in a state-of-the-art auditorium of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR). The grand concert hall was designed by Japanese experts and commissioned in autumn 2014. NOSPR provides some of the best acoustic conditions in Europe and thus is perfectly suited for extraordinary musical experiences, such as Rhye’s concert!
